As Race Director (RD) of the South East Queensland Trail Running Series, which includes events in the 7-20km range, I meet plenty of runners who are new(-ish) to trail running and who are looking to making the step up to ultra-distance trail events (which is awesome!). Along with this, I get plenty of questions about whether I think they can do it, and what it is they need to do in order to tick off the progression to running an ultra-distance event.

Over the next several weeks I'm going to do a series of posts relating to the different aspects that go into making up "The Ultra Body" - which will include the physical and mental training and improvements required to make the step up from shorter distance runs to those progressing beyond the 42.2km and including plenty of elevation gain.

The series will include:

  • Feet & Legs
  • Torso/Core
  • Heart & Lungs
  • Head (i.e. the mental stuff!)

So this is just the beginning - kicking off next Monday we're going to start to piece together your Ultra Body!
