I’ve said it plenty of times that I like to have a goal with my running. It keeps my training honest and gives me a reason to get out of bed early.

I reckon there are 3 different ways to approach setting a new running goal:

  1. Set the goal of beating a previous best time (setting a PB or PR). This is a classic running goal, and for good reason – it is super satisfying to see training pay off in that you’re running faster (over a given distance and terrain) than you ever have previously.
  2. Set the goal of running a new distance. Always run short and fast stuff? Why not set the goal of running something longer, that’s a little outside your comfort zone. And vice-versa if you always run long. If nothing else, you’ll potentially answer the age old debate (at least for yourself): what hurts more - running long and slow or short and fast?
  3. Set the goal of running a new route. Variety is the spice of life in everything that we do, and running is no different. I take the greatest pleasure in setting this type of goal, particularly around trail running. There are some amazing places to be seen in the world, and on foot and running is a great way to take them in.

Have I missed something?

See you out there – Juddy
